Choosing Lotion Sun Tan Products Available Today

By Haywood Hunter

It is quite fashionable to have at least a light brownish hue to skin during at least nine months of the year in the western hemisphere. The marketplace is flooded with preparations to make the perfect tan attainable for all, with lotion sun tan style designed to make the process safer, faster, and more enjoyable.

A lily-white complexion used to be fashionable, but California movie stars and Riviera jet-setters have changed the way people want to look. It is a personal choice whether tanning should be light or dark, but almost everyone wants at least a little bronzing. However, medical advice has been almost unanimous in saying that it is dangerous to go outside without some protection from the sun.

This is why creams, sprays, and lotions are so popular in today's cosmetic markets. Hundreds of lotions are designed to make tanning faster and easier, while offering moisturizing properties and protection from the UV rays that cause present and future damage. They come in many scents, in oils or non-oily creams, in spray form for easier application, and with names that evoke sand and sun.

A high SPF factor means that the product is designed to block the rays of the sun for a period of time and with a certain degree of completeness. The higher the SPF factor, the less sunshine is allowed to get through to the outer layers of the epidermis. Even make-up, moisturizers, and lipsticks now contain sun protection.

Research has shown that sunscreens are effective if use properly. However, authorities still recommend wearing a hat when outside, staying out of direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, and limiting the amount of exposure. Sunscreens also need to be reapplied after swimming or exercise.

Many people either have little time to be outdoors or do not enjoy the sun's heat. Fortunately for the ones who still wish to have a tan, there are many sunless tanning products. There are a few products that actually color the skin, but most develop the natural protective pigment of the skin, the melanin. This makes them last longer and appear more natural. These topical preparations must be applied carefully and evenly and work either upon application or gradually over a period of weeks.

Many feel that using an instant tanning product is better than letting the sun do the work, or even using a tanning booth. Even a booth exposes the customer to UV rays, which are known to carry risk. In fact, some medical advice holds that any tanning is a sign of damage already done.

However, other experts feel that some time in the sun contributes to total body health and advocate regular exposure for short periods of time every day. There are many lotions that are sun tan specific that are designed to make this practice as safe as it is enjoyable.
